Summertime in Argentina and Patagonia

I have begun a 17-day exploration of Argentina and Chilean Patagonia and will be posting pictures from the "southern cone" of South America. This trip is with Smithsonian Journeys and the itinerary is here. Four past travelers from my Grand Canyon river trips are with me on this excursion.

I arrived in the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, on February 26 where a summertime heatwave is occurring. It is around 90 degrees with nighttime lows of 78. Here are a few pictures of the Avenida Nueve de Julio (9th of July Avenue) commemorating Independence Day from Spain in 1816. As you can see, there are blue, blue skies with wispy cirrus - perfect skies!

Street scene. It was Sunday so very little traffic - on workdays four million people stream into the city center.

Visage of Eva Peron (Evita) on the side of a building.

Perfect skies!

This obelisk was erected in 1936 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa María de Buen Ayre in 1536.

It is a magnificent city.

Teatro Colon where we will tour on Tuesday.
